November 10, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The recent party re-registration campaign allowed the government to eradicate “decorative associations” as well as opposition parties, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has told the loyal leaders of remaining political parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extremist groups used “democratic forms of political participation” to undermine the “foundations of the constitutional order of our country,” he claimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Belarus is a young sovereign state,” the Belarusian ruler’s press office quoted him as saying. “A presidential republic is the most suitable for our society because of its historical traditions and geopolitical position. People should not just be aware of it, but take it for granted.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus does not need to copy approaches from Soviet or Russian history, much less the Western experience, \u0141uka\u0161enka said, noting that he may accept “reasonable and constructive criticism.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are not recreating the Soviet Union’s Communist Party, we are not constructing a party of power and we are not dividing society by party affiliations,” he stressed. “We will use the best experience.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian parties “will be useful if they can truly represent the interests of their members” and assist the authorities, \u0141uka\u0161enka noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parties should compete with each other at the level of projects and legislative initiatives instead of opposing authorities, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In late 2022, \u0141uka\u0161enka called for disbanding parties whose activities run counter to “the basic principles of internal and foreign policy.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In mid-February, he signed a law requiring all parties to re-register based on more rigorous membership criteria. Soon afterwards, Justice Minister Siarhiej Chamienka said that the number of political parties in Belarus would drop from fifteen to three or four after the re-registration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities have dissolved 11 opposition, loyalist and defunct alliances in the summer and fall: the Conservative Christian Party, Belarusian Patriotic Party, Belarusian Greens Party, Belarusian Social Democratic Hramada, Republican Party, Social Democratic Party of Popular Accord, Belarusian Popular Front, United Civic Party, Belarusian Social Sports Party, Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Hramada) and the Just World Party of the Left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pro-government Belarusian Agrarian Party filed for dissolution in early September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Re-registration was granted to Bie\u0142aja Ru\u015b, a party of \u0141uka\u0161enka’s supporters, the pro-government Communist Party of Belarus, Liberal Democratic Party and Republican Party of Labor and Justice.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
