January 10, BPN. <\/span><\/b>In a new attack on Belarusian-language publishers, a judge in Minsk has stripped the Janu\u0161kievi\u010d publishing house of its license.

\n \u201cMost likely, Article 33 of the law \u2018On Publishing in the Republic of Belarus\u2019 was applied,\u201d said Kniha\u016dka, the publisher’s Telegram channel. \u201cIf we\u2019re not mistaken, it happened for the first time in recent history.\u201d<\/p>\n

The article regulates termination of state-issued publishing licenses.<\/p>\n

Law enforcers searched Janu\u0161kievi\u010d\u2019s bookstore Kniha\u016dka on the day of its opening, May 16, seizing a translation of George Orwell\u2019s 1984<\/span> and other books.<\/p>\n

Founder Andrej Janu\u0161kievi\u010d and bookstore clerk, literary scholar Anastasija Karnackaja were detained and sentenced to several jail terms (Janu\u0161kievi\u010d served a total of 28 days; Karnackaja, 23 days). The founder has fled the country.<\/p>\n

As early as March 22, the landlord had demanded that the publishing house vacate its office. Janu\u0161kievi\u010d relocated to Poland and resumed its operation in October 2022.<\/p>\n
