November 7, Pozirk. The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Council has decided that Belarusian U20 and senior men’s national teams will not participate in the IIHF World Junior Championship 2027 and the IIHF World Championship 2027.

In a statement, the Council said that the decision is based on the “principles approved by the 2022 IIHF Semi-Annual Congress” and follows the IIHF Disciplinary Board’s ruling, which partially upheld the Belarusian Ice Hockey Association’s appeal against the Council’s decisions of July 27, 2026. In its ruling, the Disciplinary Board confirmed that it had no legal basis to order immediate reintegration.

In reaching its decision, the Council took into account the existing sporting and organizational arrangements for both Championships, including competition structures, schedules, ticketing and operational planning, the statement said. Having considered these circumstances, the Council determined that Belarusian national teams will not participate in these two Championships in the 2027 season, the statement added.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney told reporters on Tuesday that ice hockey players from Russia or Belarus would not be allowed to take part in the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships to be held in Canada between 26 December and 5 January.

“While Russia and Belarus are supporting this illegal, unjustified, horrific war in Ukraine, as long as that’s going on, there will be none of those athletes competing for their countries in Canada,” Carney said

Russia had been suspended from competing in International Ice Hockey Federation events since the country invaded Ukraine in February 2022, but last week the Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned the ban.

In late July, media reported that the International Ice Hockey Federation had not allowed Belarus’ national team to participate in the 2027 Men’s and Junior World Championships citing safety and security concerns.

When Russia launched a full-scale war on Ukraine with the help of authorities in Minsk in February 2022, the International Olympic Committee urged sports federations to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes from all competitions. In March 2023, it recommended that some of them could be allowed as neutral athletes under certain conditions, such as not supporting the war. In May 2026, the Committee said that it no longer recommended any restrictions.

Many sports bodies have since lifted their restrictive measures against Russia and Belarus.
