November 5, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Belarus\u2019 opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja met with Romania\u2019s president, foreign minister and Senate speaker in Bucharest on November 4 to discuss support for Belarusian political prisoners, EU sanctions policy and regional security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At her meeting with President Nicusor Dan, Cichano\u016dskaja thanked Romania for supporting the Belarusian people since 2020, including for sanctions against the Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka regime, Franak Via\u010dorka, her aide, told Pozirk<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politicians discussed Belarus\u2019 role in the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, Russian troop and weapon deployments in Belarus and hybrid threats from Moscow and Minsk, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja encouraged Bucharest to join the International Humanitarian Fund for Support of Victims of Repression in Belarus and appoint a special envoy for relations with Belarus\u2019 pro-democracy forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At her meeting with Foreign Minister Dan Necul\u0103escu, the politician asked Romania to issue Schengen visas to Belarusians and support health rehabilitation programs for former political prisoners and their families. The politicians also discussed support for Belarus\u2019 independent media, civil society and culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While meeting with Mircea Abrudean, the Senate speaker, the Belarusian politician encouraged Romania to establish a parliamentary group for a democratic Belarus and hold a hearing on Belarus, as well as consider other possible joint initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRomania itself went through dictatorship and knows how difficult it is to return the country to normality. Its experience will be useful for us when change begins in Belarus. And I want us to prepare for it now,\u201d said Cichano\u016dskaja, referring to Nicolae Ceau\u0219escu\u2019s 24-year rule that ended in 1989.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was Cichano\u016dskaja\u2019s second meeting with the Romanian president this year, after their talks in April in Dubrovnik on the sidelines of a summit of the Three Seas Initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja is staying in Romania until November 6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
