November 4, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Belarusian activists are pushing for the establishment of a For a Democratic Belarus group in Latvia’s new parliament, said Anatol Labied\u017aka, who advises Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja on constitutional reform and parliamentary cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvian MPs do not want to be on friendly terms with Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s Belarus, he told Pozirk<\/em>, commenting on the Saeima\u2019s decision not to establish cooperation groups with the official parliaments of Belarus and Russia. The move is logical as the Belarusian regime supports Moscow\u2019s war on Ukraine and is involved in hybrid attacks on the Belarusian-Latvian border, Labied\u017aka said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the decision does not mean Latvia will end contacts with Belarusian pro-democracy forces, he noted. In the previous parliamentary term, Latvian MPs similarly abandoned traditional cooperation groups with the parliaments of Belarus and Russia and instead engaged with the Belarusian opposition, Labied\u017aka added, expressing hope that a group may be formed by the end of 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 15th Latvian Saeima held its inaugural session on November 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
