November 3, Pozirk.<\/strong> Belarusian potash fertilizers are unlikely to become a viable alternative to Canadian products in the United States, VE.lt<\/em> reports, citing Igor Udovickis, co-owner of Biri\u0173 krovini\u0173 terminalas (BKT) operating the bulk cargo terminal at the Port of Klaip\u0117da in Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even the combined production capacity of manufacturers in Belarus, Russia and Germany would satisfy just about 35 percent of the US market\u2019s needs, the businessman said on social media. The US also needs a specific type of potash fertilizer, which is already in short supply in the world, therefore a switch from Canadian supplies to Belarusian products would take about ten years along with significant investments, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian potash could provide an additional source of supply for the US, diversifying the imports and reducing dependence on Canada in case of disruptions, Udovickis stressed. Potash fertilizers are a strategic raw material, and the US wants greater influence over the supply market, he added, commenting on Washington\u2019s interest in Belarusian potash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The resumption of Belarusian fertilizer transit through Lithuania is unrealistic under current circumstances, following its suspension in 2022, the businessman said. However, he dismissed the belief that Lithuania and other Baltic countries were the key transit routes for Belarusian potash, pointing to existing exports via Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In late October, Belarus announced a new shipment of potash fertilizers to the US, after a vessel laden with the first US-bound shipment of Belarusian potash in four years left Russia\u2019s Bronka port in St. Petersburg in mid-September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka said that Belarus cannot supply large volumes because its output had already been contracted for 2026. Analysts doubt that Belarus can rapidly scale up its exports to the US in the near future or compete with Canadian prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk and Washington have been discussing potash exports to the US as part of their talks that have resulted in the release of hundreds of Belarusian political prisoners and the removal of some US sanctions against Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
