October 29, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Belarus and the United States are discussing the launch of a passenger air service between the two countries, Ihar Ho\u0142ub, head of the transport ministry\u2019s aviation department, told reporters on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ho\u0142ub played up progress in talks on \u201cnew routes\u201d and said that Belarus expects the cooperation to be \u201cfurther increased, certain restrictions lifted and an air service with the United States launched.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus would be only too happy if the process advanced much more rapidly, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Ho\u0142ub, although the removal of US sanctions against Belarus\u2019 national airline Bie\u0142avija had not solved all problems, the carrier acquired aircraft and enjoys better access to technical maintenance services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said that Minsk is not involved in any talks with European aviation authorities on the resumption of passenger services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bie\u0142avija (Belavia) was banned from the European Union after Belarusian security forces forced a Ryanair plane to land in Minsk in May 2021 to arrest an opposition blogger and his girlfriend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sanctions against Bie\u0142avija were tightened following a full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia in February 2022. The United States imposed its own restrictions on the airline in August 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In November 2025, Washington lifted its sanctions after American diplomats had secured the release of more than 50 designated political prisoners during talks with Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
