October 29, Pozirk. Belarusian opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja urged democratic countries to maintain pressure on Minsk until systemic change begins, her aide Franak Viačorka told Pozirk after a meeting with democratic countries’ diplomats on October 27.

The event in Dublin was organized by Artur Michalski, head of the Polish Embassy in Ireland and Polish ambassador to Belarus from 2018 to 2023, who has been supporting Belarusian pro-democracy forces for many years. Envoys from 15 European Union countries as well as diplomats from Canada, the United Kingdom and Ukraine attended the meeting.

Cichanoŭskaja briefed the diplomats on the current situation in Belarus, noting that liberation of dissidents in Belarus should remain in the humanitarian sphere, describing the end of repression as the ultimate goal. Alaksandar Łukašenka should not be allowed to use humanitarian negotiations to intensify repression and consolidate his regime, she argued.

The politician focused separately on Belarus’ growing dependence on Russia in the military sphere and Belarusian companies’ military contracts with Russia.

Cichanoŭskaja also advocated easing the legalization procedures for Belarusian exiles, who often face difficulties because of expired passports and problems obtaining travel documents. She welcomed Ireland’s decision to accept expired Belarusian passports when renewing residence permits and urged other countries to seek practical solutions for Belarusians.

The opposition leader called for continued support for independent Belarusian media and programs that help Belarusians maintain ties with Europe.
