October 26, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Authorities appear to be removing former political prisoners from the \u201cterrorist\u201d list when their formal status of convicts expires, according to the Viasna Human Rights Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People who are released after completing their sentences or being pardoned by Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka are not automatically removed from the Committee for State Security (KGB)\u2019s list of \u201cpersons involved in terrorist activities,\u201d Viasna reported. Rather the KGB appears to wait until the end of their \u201cperiod of conviction,\u201d which amounts to two years for \u201cless serious crimes,\u201d five years for \u201cserious crimes\u201d and eight years for \u201cespecially serious crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is not clear whether the dozens of political prisoners who have been released early and forcibly taken out of Belarus as a result of Minsk\u2019s talks with Washington over the last one and a half years have been \u201cpardoned,\u201d as no official record shows that they have this status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Viasna, the KGB has deleted 40 individuals from the \u201cterrorist\u201d list since May. Among them are rock musician Viktar Kato\u016dski; Alaksiej Zabiran, a former employee of nitrogen fertilizer plant Hrodna Azot; businessman Alaksandr Nahie\u0142a; and trade union activist Alaksandr Mi\u0161uk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of the individuals dropped from the list are former political prisoners convicted over online comments or participation in protests, Viasna said. Some of them were released as far back as 2024, but have stayed on the list until this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, the list features 1,476 names, roughly half of them citizens of Belarus. Most of the Belarusians were convicted on charges widely seen as politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The terrorist designation requires banks to freeze the designated persons\u2019 accounts. The designees cannot conduct any wireless cash transactions through banks and the post office. They cannot receive money transfers in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
