October 21, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Carmelo Ficarra, Italy\u2019s new charg\u00e9 d\u2019affaires, has presented copies of his credentials t to Deputy Foreign Minister Ihar Siakreta, the Belarusian foreign ministry reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ficarra has worked in Italy\u2019s foreign ministry since 2002, serving in Russia, Iraq, Iran and Hong Kong. He is the third diplomat from a Western European country to be accredited in Belarus as a permanent rather than temporary charg\u00e9 d\u2019affaires after Germany\u2019s Katrin aus dem Siepen and the United Kingdom\u2019s William Longhurst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a member of the European Union, Italy complies with all sanctions imposed on Belarus. In response, Minsk placed it on its list of \u201cunfriendly\u201d states. The embassies of both countries are headed by charg\u00e9s d\u2019affaires, and official contacts have been kept to a minimum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
