October 16, Pozirk. The existing network of people’s militia units needs to be expanded, Alaksandar Łukašenka has said while visiting the Vierchniadźvinsk district in the Vicibsk region, bordering Latvia and Russia, his press office reports.

“You have one unit, a good unit. But that’s not enough. We need to expand. We need to create more such basic units elsewhere. They must be interconnected,” the Belarusian ruler said after observing a training session of a unit formed staff of a local hunting preserve.

“Every village council should have a people’s militia unit,” the politician stressed. “That is the core. In the event of hostilities, this core can be expanded. The village council serves as the foundation for the people’s militia. Weapons have been prepared for you. That’s the military’s job. You will have assault rifles, grenades and machine guns. And then there are the UAVs. It’s good that you’ve mastered the use of drones.”

“The main thing isn’t even shooting. The main thing is physical training. You must learn to dodge a bullet,” he added.

Three years ago, Łukašenka instructed former Interior Minister Ihar Šunievič, who now chairs the Belarusian Society of Hunters and Fishers, to draw hunters to the people’s militia units. Those hunters who are not called up by military enlistment offices “will certainly take part in any action necessary for the defense of the state,” he said at that time.

The Belarusian ruler ordered the formation of people’s militia units in Belarus a few months after Russia launched a full-scale war on Ukraine, in which the Belarusian authorities supported the Kremlin.
