October 16, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Poland has not recorded any attempts at irregular entry by undocumented third-country foreigners via Belarus since September 16, according to Pozirk\u2019s <\/em>analysis of border guards\u2019 data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland reported 85 irregular crossing attempts from Belarus in September. In contrast to previous years, the migrant pressure on the country has been significantly lower than on Lithuania and Latvia this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In particular, Poland prevented only 474 attempted crossings between January and September, which accounts for only 3 percent of all crossings. By contrast, Latvia thwarted nearly 85 percent of all irregular crossings this year and Lithuania, 12 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Polish Foreign Minister Rados\u0142aw Sikorski noted a \u201cslight thaw\u201d in relations with Minsk in late September. He linked the warming to the fulfilment of Warsaw\u2019s conditions, including the release of Polish minority activist Andrej Pa\u010dobut (Andrzej Poczobut) from prison and the fact that he had been allowed to re-enter Belarus and then leave it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cigarette smuggling balloons from Belarus have stopped flying toward Poland, and the eastern border has been quiet in the context of the migration crisis, the Polish official added. Sikorski stressed that the absence of irregular crossing attempts was not the achievement of the Minsk regime but the result of Poland having \u201cspent more than a billion euros on the construction of a barrier and a border security operation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities have repeatedly criticized their neighbors for erecting barriers along the border. Earlier this week, however, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka said the fences built by neighboring European Union countries to curb irregular migration via Belarus benefited Minsk, arguing that they would impede advancing forces in the event of an attack from the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people eager to cross into the EU surged in spring 2021 after \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government suspended a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia, Lithuania and Poland call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
