In May 2021, Osipa\u016d was sentenced to 13 years and three months in prison over an incident in which he was caught in the middle of a violent crackdown on post-election protesters on a roadway in Minsk and tried to flee the scene, allegedly hitting five military servicemen with his car. The young man, who has developed serious health problems behind bars, has had his term extended twice, by a total of two years and two months, as an \u201cpersistent violator\u201d of prison rules, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Uniformed law-enforcement officers and men in civilian clothes visited the relatives of exiled opposition activists Maryna Kasiniera\u016d. A district judge in Minsk on October 16 will start hearing a criminal case against Maryna and her husband Via\u010das\u0142a\u016d Kasiniera\u016d. The couple lead Dissidentby, a human rights group that documents politically motivated persecution in Belarus and provides support to its victims.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The information ministry added four TikTok, Odnoklassniki, Threads and Instagram accounts to its list of \u201cextremist content.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja called on member countries of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) to stand up to the policy of transnational repression pursued by Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s regime. Speaking during the Warsaw Human Dimension Conference, she named six methods employed by the regime to put pressure on its exiled opponents, namely, designating them as \u201cextremists\u201d and \u201cterrorists,\u201d intimidating their relatives in Belarus, convicting them in absentia, depriving them of valid documents, issuing international arrest warrants, and harassing them online.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At least 229 trials have been held in Belarus since 2022 with the defendants being absent, including at least 24 in 2026. Since the start of 2026, 27 such cases have been opened. Those accused have been sentenced to up to 25 years in prison and to fines of up to 225,000 rubels ($75,000), the Viasna Human Rights Center reported. \u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As many as 113 women convicted on politically motivated charges are still behind bars in Belarus. At least 14 of them have children under 18 years of age, \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja said in a Mother\u2019s Day message.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The number of documented political prisoners in Belarus remained unchanged at 878, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported. The actual number of political prisoners in the country is much larger, as many cases go unreported.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>October 15, Pozirk.
