October 9, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>The opposition Coordination Council (CC) has adopted a resolution calling for an unconditional and immediate abolition of the death penalty in Belarus ahead of the European and World Day against the Death Penalty on October 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fifty-two CC members supported the resolution, with only one voting against it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The document, authored by Mikita Siamionenka from the coalition of Pavie\u0142 \u0141atu\u0161ka and Movement for Freedom, argues that capital punishment violates the right to life and the principle of human dignity, making the consequences of a miscarriage of justice fatal and irreversible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The resolution notes amendments to Belarusian legislation in 2022 and 2023 that expanded the range of crimes punishable by death, including attempted acts of terrorism and high treason. \u201cIn the context of widespread politically-motivated persecution and the complete dismantling of an independent judiciary, these provisions could be used against the regime\u2019s political opponents,\u201d it reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus remains the only country in Europe to use the death penalty. About 350 people have been executed during Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s 30 years in power, Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja said last year. Only a few cases of clemency are known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
