October 9, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Moldova\u2019s forthcoming withdrawal from the Commonwealth of Independent States is a \u201cshort sighted\u201d decision by the country\u2019s leadership rather than a choice made by \u201cordinary Moldovans,\u201d Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka said on October 9, speaking during a summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in Turkmenistan, according to his press office and state media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka claimed that Moldova\u2019s authorities \u201cunderstand this\u201d and are reluctant to pull out of the Free Trade Area Agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He urged Chi\u0219in\u0103u to keep options open for \u201cordinary citizens\u201d and avoid breaking ties with the Russia-led CIS \u201cat least initially.\u201d \u201cSimply put, why lose what we have?\u201d he wondered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Citing Georgia\u2019s earlier exit from the CIS, \u0141uka\u0161enka argued that \u201chistory always repeats itself.\u201d He said that the \u201cCIS foundation\u201d makes it easier for countries to restore \u201cnormal relations\u201d and deepen cooperation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka criticized the Commonwealth for not doing enough to strengthen member states\u2019 economies and warned that other countries could gradually drift away toward other alliances. \u201cWe know perfectly well who is eyeing our organization\u2019s [member] states,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moldova stopped participating in CIS activities in 2023 and is scheduled to formally leave the Commonwealth on April 8, 2027. In June 2022, Moldova became a candidate for membership in the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
