October 7, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Around 2,500 people have been convicted of extremist crimes over a year and a half, Prosecutor General D\u017amitryj Hara said on October 7, speaking during a meeting of both parliamentary houses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSpecial\u201d criminal proceedings have been instituted against individuals who have fled Belarus, with criminal cases against 150 such persons referred to courts since 2022, Hara said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Together with state security agencies, work has been done to ban the activities of terrorist and extremist organizations, Hara said. At the request of the Prosecutor General\u2019s Office, the Supreme Court has designated the United Transitional Cabinet as a terrorist organization and European Humanities University as an extremist organization, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its September report<\/a>, the Viasna Human Rights Center says that 4,815 people have been granted political prisoner status in the six years since the 2020 presidential election in Belarus. At least 10,172 people have faced politically motivated criminal charges, with 8,696 individuals convicted, including in absentia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of October 7, human rights defenders had identified 884 political prisoners. The actual number is much larger, as many cases go unreported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Supreme Court of Belarus labeled the opposition United Transitional Cabinet as a terrorist organization in July 2025. Andrej \u0160vied, who was prosecutor general at that time, claimed that \u201cmembers of the group directly participated in organizing acts of terrorism in Belarus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

European Humanities University in Vilnius was branded an extremist organization in April 2026. D\u017amitryj Brylo\u016d, a departmental chief at the Prosecutor General\u2019s Office, claimed that the exiled university provides support to radical politicized groups and destructive foreign NGOs and is used by state security agencies to cause damage to Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the crackdown on the 2020 post-election protests, authorities in Belarus equated criticism, solidarity, advocacy, the free media and free expression with extremism and terrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
