October 5, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> As many as 4,815 people have been granted political prisoner status in the six years since the 2020 presidential election in Belarus, the Viasna Human Rights Center says in its September report<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least 10,172 people have faced politically motivated criminal charges, with 8,696 individuals convicted, including in absentia, Viasna said, adding that the numbers grow every month despite the regime\u2019s attempts to deny repression in Belarus or to conceal its real scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human rights defenders had identified 876 political prisoners as of September 30, including 113 women. Twenty-five people were recognized as political prisoners in September. As many of 3,991 people, including 792 women, had the status of former political prisoners.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least 170 political prisoners are in a particularly vulnerable situation because of the state of their health, age or confinement conditions. This number is consistently high despite the fact that such prisoners are released on a regular basis either after being pardoned or upon completion of their terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around 900 political prisoners have been released since July 2024 under Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s pardoning edicts and as a result of talks between Minsk and Washington. At the same time, the number of individuals known to have been convicted in politically motivated criminal cases has increased by 3,500 and the number of people on the interior ministry\u2019s \u201cextremist\u201d list has risen by 2,700. As many as 1,044 individuals have been recognized as political prisoners and 346 people have been granted the status of former political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Viasna Human Rights Center concludes that the human rights situation in Belarus remains \u201ccritical.\u201d Systemic repression is not easing and new repressive practices are appearing, the report says.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
