October 4,\u00a0Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong>\u00a0The number of secondary school teachers in Belarus fell from 111,400 at the start of the 2020\/21 academic year to 98,100 five years later, according to Pozirk<\/em>\u2019s analysis of the official data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Years 2020 and 2021 stand out, as 4,700 teachers left the profession in this period, marred by the crackdown on dissenters and mass political emigration after the disputed 2020 presidential election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In five years, cities and towns lost 7,100 teachers; rural areas, 6,200.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The students-to-teachers ratio rose to 11 students per teacher in 2025 from 10 in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In five years, the proportion of female teachers rose by 1 percentage point to 87.5 percent, while the number of teachers with higher education fell 0.7 percentage point to 93 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teachers in Belarus face pressure, restrictions and demands unrelated to education in addition to the responsibilities of their profession, Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has said on the occasion of Teachers\u2019 Day celebrated in Belarus on October 4 this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politician praised teachers for their commitment despite the challenges, singling out those who teach Belarusian language, literature and history. \u201cYou help children discover and love what is theirs, their language, culture, and heritage, even when others are trying to suppress and rewrite all of this. Thank you for continuing to pass on to children what must never be lost,\u201d Cichano\u016dskaja said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s message stressed that teachers\u2019 work is more valuable than ever in the era of digital transformation. He said no algorithm can replace human involvement, guidance and support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
