September 29, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Sanctions against the regimes in Belarus and Russia should be preserved, and democracies should be ready to \u201cshow their teeth,\u201d Belarusian pro-democracy leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja said during the European Forum on Parliamentary Democracy in Brussels on September 29.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDictators perceive an invitation [to talks] as a weakness,\u201d Cichano\u016dskaja was quoted as saying by her press office. \u201cWe should have no illusions. They understand the language of force. And democracies must be ready to show their teeth. We must maintain sanctions against Russia and [Alaksandar] \u0141uka\u0161enka. But at the same time, we must strengthen society. Military power alone is not enough. We need people ready to defend their values.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja stressed that the \u201cfate of democracy\u201d is being decided in Belarus, Moldova, Georgia and, above all, Ukraine. She expressed confidence that Ukraine\u2019s \u201csuccess\u201d would open a \u201cwindow of opportunities\u201d for democratic transition in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja expressed gratitude to the European Parliament, German, Italian, Irish, Swedish, French and other European lawmakers, noting that 24 parliaments in Europe had set up parliamentary groups in support of democratic Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja stressed that \u201cdemocracy cannot be taken for granted but should instead be cherished and defended every single day.\u201d She warned Europeans against \u201cletting populists and authoritarian leaders kill your democracy from within.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to her aide Franak Via\u010dorka, Cichano\u016dskaja was to make an opening address at the EU Parliamentary Democracy Forum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The forum will be hosted by the European Parliament in Brussels from September 29 to October 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja will also take part in a discussion moderated by European Parliament Vice President Esteban Gonzalez Pons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event will bring together about 700 members of the European Parliament, national legislatures, civil society and youth activists, scholars and experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The key topics include protecting democracy and democratic institutions, countering threats to elections, supporting civil society, strengthening ties between the European Parliament and national parliaments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
