September 24, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarusian dissident journalist and prominent Polish minority activist Andrej Pa\u010dobut (Andrzej Poczobut), who is currently visiting the United States,\u00a0met with John Coale, US special envoy for Belarus, to discuss ways to improve the situation in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pa\u010dobut also raised issues regarding the Polish minority in Belarus and jailed dissidents, expressing gratitude for Coale\u2019s involvement in securing his release from prison earlier this year, according to a post on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his recent interview with Russia\u2019s Dozhd <\/em>Coale that he had not discussed democratization during his talks with Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, although he might do so in the future.\u00a0The diplomat explained that his main priority is to secure freedom for political prisoners rather than address Belarus\u2019 domestic policy.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 16, Minsk freed the 25 dissidents in exchange for the lifting of US sanctions on two Belarusian companies following Coale’s meeting with \u0141uka\u0161enka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pa\u010dobut, known as a contributor to\u00a0Gazeta Wyborcza<\/em>, was arrested in March 2021 as part of a crackdown on the unofficial Union of Poles in Belarus. He was given eight years in prison for allegedly inciting hatred and calling for sanctions in a case widely seen as politically motivated. Authorities freed Pa\u010dobut on April 28 and deported him to Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
