September 23, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> US Special Envoy for Belarus John Coale told Russia\u2019s Dozhd that he had not raised the issue of democratization during his talks with Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, although he might do so in the future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coale explained that his main priority is to secure freedom for political prisoners rather than discuss Belarus’ domestic policy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coale played down the fact that the regime continues to arrest its opponents while releasing some political prisoners. He said that he had already negotiated the release of between 700 and 800 people and was hoping to liberate several hundred more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coale said that US negotiators do not set any conditions for talks with Minsk. Donald Trump’s administration believes in talking to all parties in an effort to achieve Washington’s goals, he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Coale, his meetings with \u0141uka\u0161enka last between three and four hours and cover different subjects, including Russia’s war against Ukraine. Coale suggested that \u0141uka\u0161enka could act as a mediator between the two countries. He said that \u0141uka\u0161enka is Vladimir Putin’s friend who has known him for 30 years and can tell him what no one else can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
