September 23, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The Baltic states are not making concessions to the United States regarding the transit of Belarusian potash through their territory, Deividas Matulionis, national security advisor to the Lithuanian president, told LRT Radio<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200b\u201cAny violation of EU sanctions would have a moral aspect, as well as legal and financial ones\u2026It would be a kind of moral humiliation,\u201d Matulionis warned. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200b\u200bLithuania knows that America is interested in cheap Belarusian fertilizers, and this has been discussed, both previously and last week with John Coale, US Special Envoy for Belarus, during his visit to Vilnius, Matulionis said, insisting that Lithuania is not facing any pressure from Washington. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bMatulionis added that the United States is also discussing this topic with other countries in the region, “but so far we are all standing together, and I see no concessions either from our side or from other neighboring countries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stressed that Lithuania would not like Belarusian potash to be supplied to the United States through Russia either, “because that would generate additional revenue for the Russian war machine.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bMatulionis noted that the EU’s sanctions against the Belarusian potash industry are in formally place until February 2027. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

US President Donald Trump told reporters on Tuesday that a \u201cpotash deal\u201d with Belarus would benefit the Unites States and denied that it would strengthen Russia\u2019s hand in its war against Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBelarus has a lot of potash and our farmers need good prices and we want to get a lower price in Canada. We will continue to go with Canada, but Belarus would like to sell it for a much lower price,\u201d Trump said<\/a> during a joint news conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly\u2019s High-Level Week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 21, Trump wrote on Truth Social that the United States is \u201cworking on a massive deal with respect to the purchase of potash from Belarus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe pricing would be for substantially less than we are currently paying to Canada, very good news for our Farmers and Ranchers,\u201d the post said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier on Monday, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka said that Belarus cannot supply large volumes of potash fertilizers to the United States because its output has already been pledged to other countries under contracts for 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk and Washington have been discussing possible potash exports to the United States as part of their talks that have resulted in the release of hundreds of Belarusian political prisoners and the removal of some US sanctions against Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 16, Minsk freed 25 political prisoners following a meeting between \u0141uka\u0161enka and John Coale, the US special envoy for Belarus, in exchange for Washington lifting sanctions on Belarusian Timber, Woodworking, Pulp and Paper Industry Concern (Biellespapierapram) and AAT \u0141akafarba, a state-owned producer of paints and varnishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coale had reportedly hoped to secure the release of 200 to 300 political prisoners, while \u0141uka\u0161enka said that he was open to both \u201csmall and grand bargains\u201d with the US president, including agreements on shipments of Belarusian potash fertilizers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his previous visit to Minsk, which took place in March, Coale negotiated the release of 250 political prisoners. Fifteen were taken out of the country, while the rest were allowed to stay in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
