September 23, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>The neighboring European Union countries have not allowed at least 1,118 undocumented third-country foreigners to cross irregularly via Belarus since the start of this month, according to Pozirk<\/em>\u2019s analysis of border guards\u2019 data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of attempts dropped 13.5 percent month on month due to a 23.7-percent decrease reported by Latvia. However, irregular crossings into Poland doubled from 43 to 85. Lithuania also posted an increase from 196 to 228 attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia\u2019s share in total attempts dropped to 72 percent after 81.6 percent in the first three weeks of August. Lithuania accounted for 20.4 percent and Poland, for 7.6 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors have thwarted at least 13,289 irregular crossings via Belarus since the start of 2026. Latvia remains the primary target with 11,240 attempts, followed by Lithuania with 1,575 attempts and Poland with 474 attempts. Latvia has been registering irregular crossings via Belarus for 181 continuous days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to cross into the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government suspended a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia, Lithuania and Poland call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
