September 22, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Buying blood potash from Belarus is supporting Russian aggression, Scott Moe, premier of Canada\u2019s province of Saskatchewan, wrote on X<\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMore than 40 countries – Canada and its allies – have sanctions against Belarus for supporting war criminal Putin\u2019s invasion of Ukraine,\u201d he said. \u201cBuying blood potash from Belarus is supporting Russian aggression. It\u2019s wrong and it doesn\u2019t make sense. All of that potash has to be shipped first through Russia, then across the ocean, then across the US to mid-western farmers. Does anyone believe Belarusian blood potash shipped through Russia is going to be more affordable, more sustainable or more ethical than potash shipped from Saskatchewan – right here in North America?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reporting on the story, Canada\u2019s CBC said<\/a>, with reference to Natural Resources Canada, that almost a third of the world’s potash production came from Canada in 2024 and all of the country’s 10 active potash mines are in Saskatchewan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anglo\u2011Australian mining company BHP is building the Jansen potash mine in Saskatchewan and expects to start commercial production in mid-2027, the report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

University of Regina economics professor Jason Childs stressed that exporting potash to the U.S. from Belarus could end up costing more compared to exports from Canada. “I’m skeptical just because you’ve got so much more transportation to deal with,” Childs said in an interview with CBC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Unless you come up with some wonderful deal where Belarus is going to have way lower production costs or something like that, I don’t see it being that big a boon for the American farmer.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If Trump does make a deal with Belarus, it could affect the companies in Canada by lowering the overall price of potash, Childs warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 21, US President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that the United States is \u201cworking on a massive deal with respect to the purchase of potash from Belarus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe pricing would be for substantially less than we are currently paying to Canada, very good news for our Farmers and Ranchers,\u201d the post<\/a> says. \u201cThank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier on Monday, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka said that Belarus cannot supply large volumes of potash fertilizers to the United States because its output has already been pledged to other countries under contracts for 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk and Washington have been discussing possible potash exports to the United States as part of their talks that have resulted in the release of hundreds of Belarusian political prisoners and the removal of some US sanctions against Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 16, Minsk freed 25 political prisoners following a meeting between \u0141uka\u0161enka and John Coale, the US special envoy for Belarus, in exchange for Washington lifting sanctions on Belarusian Timber, Woodworking, Pulp and Paper Industry Concern (Biellespapierapram) and AAT \u0141akafarba, a state-owned producer of paints and varnishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coale had reportedly hoped to secure the release of 200 to 300 political prisoners, while \u0141uka\u0161enka said that he was open to both \u201csmall and grand bargains\u201d with the US president, including agreements on shipments of Belarusian potash fertilizers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his previous visit to Minsk, which took place in March, Coale negotiated the release of 250 political prisoners. Fifteen were taken out of the country, while the rest were allowed to stay in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
