September 22, <\/strong>Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>Latvia has not allowed at least 11,070 undocumented third-country foreigners to cross irregularly via Belarus since March 25, with an average of 62 daily attempts, according to Pozirk<\/em>\u2019s analysis of border guards\u2019 data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia reported only 141 irregular border crossings between early 2026 and late March, averaging fewer than two attempts a day. No attempts were recorded in January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The country accounted for 84.7 percent of all attempts to cross irregularly into the European Union via Belarus this year. However, recently it experienced a decrease from 95.6 percent of all attempts in June to 89.4 percent in July, to 79 percent in August and to 72.7 percent since the start of September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuania has thwarted 1,553 irregular crossings this year (11.7 percent of the total) and Poland, 474 attempts (3.6 percent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to cross into the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government suspended a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia, Lithuania and Poland call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
