September 20, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Belarus\u2019 pro-democracy leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has welcomed Washington\u2019s move to impose new sweeping sanctions on Russia, targeting major buyers of its crude oil and natural gas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI welcome the signing into US law of the Lindsey O. Graham sanctions bill to increase pressure on Russia for its war against Ukraine,\u201d Cichano\u016dskaja says on X<\/a>. \u201cBy supporting Ukraine, you also support Belarusians in our fight for freedom. We must make dictators pay a higher price for war and repression.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

US President Donald Trump signed the \u201cLindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026\u201d on September 18, after the bill was passed by the House of Representatives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 48-page bill grants the White House discretionary powers to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on the world’s largest buyers of Russian oil and gas. Trade data show that China accounted for 50 percent of Russian crude exports between December 2022 and August 2026, followed closely by India with 37 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond targeting energy trade, the package cracks down on Russia’s financial institutions, defense networks, and its “shadow fleet” of tankers used to bypass Western restrictions.\u00a0It also extends existing economic sanctions targeting Iran for an additional five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bill passed with substantial bipartisan backing,\u00a0clearing the Senate 86-11 before passing the House 262-159,\u00a0though some lawmakers expressed reservations regarding the expansion of executive trade authority.\u00a0Lawmakers named the package in honor of the late South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham,\u00a0one of Ukraine\u2019s staunchest supporters in Washington who died on July 11.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
