September 9, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Belarusian Nobel Prize winner Ale\u015b Bialacki (Ales Bialiatski), who was released from a Belarusian prison last December, met with US Special Envoy for Belarus John Coale in Washington on September 8. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Bialacki, the meeting \u201ctook place in a warm atmosphere,\u201d the Viasna Human Rights Center reported, without elaborating.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alex Raufoglu, a Washington-based correspondent of Radio Free Europe\/Radio Liberty,\u00a0announced\u00a0on Wednesday, citing anonymous sources,\u00a0that\u00a0John Coale\u00a0plans to visit Belarus on September 14. \u201cCoale is seeking another prisoner release, telling people around him he\u2019s helped free 700-800 people and hopes to reach 1,000,\u201d\u00a0Raufoglu\u00a0wrote on X.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In total, more than 400 political prisoners have been released as a result of talks between Minsk and Washington. In exchange, the United States is gradually lifting sanctions against Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In particular, Washington has dropped its restrictive measures against Bie\u0142investbank, the Development Bank of Belarus, the Ministry of Finance, the Bie\u0142aru\u015bkalij potash giant and Belarusian Potash Company, and Belarus\u2019 national airline Bie\u0142avija.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following his last meeting with a US delegation led by Coale on March 19, \u0141uka\u0161enka ordered the release of 250 political prisoners, of whom 235 were allowed to stay in Belarus and 15 were taken to Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ale\u015b\u00a0Bialacki, head of the Viasna Human Rights Center,\u00a0was arrested in July 2021 and subsequently sentenced to 10 years in prison on charges widely seen as politically motivated. He\u00a0was released\u00a0and forcibly deported\u00a0in December 2025\u00a0along with 122 other prisoners after Coale\u2019s meeting with \u0141uka\u0161enka.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
