September 9, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Halting passenger bus services between Lithuania and Belarus would not have major impact on transport companies, Gintaras Nakutis, head of the Lithuanian Passenger Transport Association, told LRT<\/em> radio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commenting on a call by conservative lawmaker Arvydas Anu\u0161auskas to follow the example of Latvia, whichmay ban all bus services linking it with Belarus and Russia, Nakutis said that Lithuania\u2019s transport sector would cope with a ban if it was put into place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“If such decisions were made, businesses definitely don\u2019t operate in such a way that someone would go bankrupt here,” Nakutis said. \u201cThe border was closed before and no one went bankrupt. Nothing would happen, but there would be side effects.\u201d He explained that Belarus is only one of the many destinations for Lithuanian bus carriers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, bus services between Lithuania and Belarus operate around 30 trips every day, serving about 3,000 passengers with every bus fully booked, Nakutis said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Anu\u0161auskas, a ban on bus travel to and from Belarus and Russia is necessary to ensure security and stability in the region. He warned that if Lithuania refuses to join Latvia, it risks becoming a transit hub absorbing all suspended routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
