September 7, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>The Belarusian government has dissolved at least 2,072 NGOs, including associations, trade unions and foundations, between the 2020 presidential election and August 31, 2026, Lawtrend said in a recent report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the end of last month, at least 1,264 NGOs were in the process of dissolution ordered by authorities, and 808 filed for dissolution on their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least 99 NGOs were shut down in 2025, 382 in 2024 and 336 in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human rights defenders said that religious communities that had failed to re-register before July 5 face pressure to shut down. Authorities also continued to harass civil society activists, filing criminal and minor offense charges against them, blacklisting online content and applying other forms of pressure on exiled activists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, officials have recently expanded the use of restrictive legislation to activities outside the political sphere, Lawtrend said, citing an incident in Hrodna in which pub quiz games were targeted. Officials reportedly classified the gatherings as mass events requiring prior authorization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
