September 4, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarus\u2019 interior ministry on September 4 added 52 names to its list of people it considers \u201cinvolved in extremist activities,\u201d a major update taking the total to 6,887 entries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the new people on the list, Juryj Malkievi\u010d, is a citizen of Ukraine. He was imprisoned for \u201cintelligence activities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As many as 32 of the recently added individuals are serving prison sentences. Only half of them are recognized as political prisoners. They include eight women serving between eight years and three months and 10 years in prison for alleged involvement in a network of neighborhood chat groups and three men serving five-year sentences for alleged donations to Belarusian volunteers fighting for Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interior ministry says the sentences of 19 other designated individuals have not been completed, which means that they may be serving non-custodial terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the new additions, Anton Ksiandzo\u016d convicted of facilitating \u201cextremism\u201d and insulting Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, has been \u201cexempted from liability\u201d because of the expiration of the statute of limitations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People placed on the list of individuals involved in \u201cextremist\u201d activities are banned from any education- and publishing-related activity, as well as from holding state positions and from doing military service, for five years after completing their sentences or after the related conviction is deleted from the criminal record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their financial transactions are subject to close monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the crackdown on the 2020 post-election protests, authorities in Belarus equated criticism, solidarity, advocacy, the free media and free expression with extremism and terrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
