September 3, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Lithuania supports tighter sanctions against Belarus, Lithuanian Seimas Speaker Juozas Olekas has told journalists following today’s meeting with Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe do not see any changes that would allow us to ease sanctions or to believe that doing so would have an even greater positive effect in terms of democracy,\u201d Delfi <\/em>quoted him as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His statement echoed a recent remark by Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevi\u010dius, who said he saw no reason to change his country\u2019s position toward the Belarusian regime or to ease sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Olekas also said that Lithuania, together with its European and US partners, continues to seek opportunities for dialogue with the Belarusian authorities. Such an engagement is necessary to convey to Minsk that there is \u201canother way\u201d that includes an end to politically motivated reprisals, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At today\u2019s meeting, Cichano\u016dskaja called on Lithuania to make Belarus \u201cone of the priorities on the European agenda\u201d during its presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2027, her press office said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
