September 1, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Lithuania recorded a 90-percent rise in the number of attempts by undocumented third-country foreigners to enter their territory from Belarus in August, while Poland and Latvia recorded decreased of 50 and 40 percent, respectively, according to Pozirk\u2019s analysis of border guards\u2019 data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The three neighboring European Union countries reportedly prevented a total of 1,741 attempts at irregular entry from Belarus in August, including 1,375 into Latvia, down from 2.275 in July; 54 into Poland, down from 106; and 312 into Lithuania, up from 163.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A total of 2,544 irregular crossing attempts were reportedly prevented in July, 2,439 in June, 2,583 in May, and 2,195 in April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors reported thwarting 12,173 irregular crossings since the start of 2026, with 85.7 percent of the incidents reported by Latvia, 11.1 percent by Lithuania and 3.2 percent by Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

August 2025 reportedly saw 6.685 attempts by irregular migrants to cross from Belarus into the neighboring EU countries, 3.8 times more than in August 2026. Poland was the primary target, accounting for 69.9 percent of all attempted crossings. Polish border guards reportedly thwarted 5,340 attempts at irregular entry in August, the record high last year.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people eager to cross into the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government suspended a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia, Lithuania and Poland call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
