August 29, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has marked the Day of Remembrance for Ukraine\u2019s fallen defenders, established in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe honour all who gave their lives for Ukraine\u2019s freedom, including Belarusians who fought and fell in its defense, she said on X. \u201cWe owe them a future where Ukraine is victorious and Belarus is finally free.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On August 29, 2014, one of the most tragic episodes of the Russian-Ukrainian war before the full-scale invasion unfolded as Ukrainian soldiers attempted to break out of the Ilovaisk encirclement. At that time, the Russian leadership violated the agreements, and Ukrainian servicemen were shot as they moved in columns along what was supposed to be a \u2018green corridor,\u2019 according to the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 90 Belarusians lost their lives fighting alongside Ukrainians against \u201ca common enemy \u2014 imperial Russia,\u201d Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha told Cichano\u016dskaja at their meeting in Kyiv earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
