August 28,\u00a0Pozirk<\/em>.\u00a0<\/strong>Belarus\u2019 interior ministry has added 12 names to its list of people it considers \u201cinvolved in extremist activities,\u201d taking the total to 6,836 entries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the recently added individuals, Viktar Huryn, is\u00a0serving a three-and-a-half-year prison term in the Bie\u0142aruski Hajun case. Huryn reportedly criticized Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and law enforcers on the Telegram messaging app in 2020 and 2021. Rights groups consider his persecution to be politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other recent additions include imprisoned Lithuanian David Medvedev (Deividas Stanilavi\u010dius), convicted on charges of facilitating extremist activities and jailed Belarusian Andrej Kuzianko\u016d, persecuted for allegedly inciting hatred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interior ministry says the sentences of the nine other designated individuals have not been completed, which may mean that they may be serving non-custodial terms. They are Mikita Kuzika\u016d, D\u017amitryj Zoba\u010da\u016d, D\u017amitryj Karda\u0161, Mika\u0142aj Ramano\u016dski, Jaras\u0142a\u016d Pucicki, \u015aviat\u0142ana Dzia\u016ddziera, \u017dana Kavalenka, Dzianis Nadta\u010deje\u016d and Mikita Michadziuk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People placed on the list of individuals involved in \u201cextremist\u201d activities are banned from any education- and publishing-related activity, as well as from holding state positions and from doing military service, for five years after completing their sentences or after the related conviction is deleted from the criminal record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their financial transactions are subject to close monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the crackdown on the 2020 post-election protests, authorities in Belarus equated criticism, solidarity, advocacy, the free media and free expression with extremism and terrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
