August 27, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka expressed confidence in his Independence Day greetings to the Moldovan people that “the experience of mutually beneficial cooperation accumulated over three decades,” despite the “tense international situation,” will serve as “the basis for restoring a full-fledged constructive dialogue” between Belarus and Moldova.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Independence Day “embodies the sovereign choice of the Moldovan people, symbolizing aspiration to a free and worthy future and the preservation of a distinct culture and traditions,” \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s press office quotes him as saying in his message. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many years, Belarusians and Moldovans have been bound by ties of friendship, \u0141uka\u0161enka says. He cites a \u201cshared historic fate and the memory of the feat of our fathers and grandfathers, who fought shoulder to shoulder on the frontlines of the [1941-45] Great Patriotic War.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last month, Moldova was among the eight countries that joined the European Union\u2019s sanctions on Izovac Ltd.(OOO Izovac), a Belarusian-based specializing in vacuum coating technologies and related software. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On May 26, \u0141uka\u0161enka had a meeting in Minsk with former Moldovan President Igor Dodon, who currently leads the pro-Russian Party of Socialists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka reportedly called for reviving the Belarusian-Moldovan interstate commission for trade and economic cooperation and invited Dodon to discuss issues relating to the Eurasian Economic Union, despite the fact that Moldova a candidate for EU membership. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Belarusian embassy in Moldova, the Belarusian-Moldovan commission for trade and economic cooperation held its last meeting in June 2018, halfway through Dodon\u2019s four-year presidency. In 2024, bilateral trade in goods reportedly totaled $176.1 million, with Belarusian exports amounting to $98.3 million and imports to $77.8 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In December 2020, Dodon lost his reelection bid to pro-European candidate Maia Sandu. Since then, Sandu has twice met with Belarusian pro-democracy leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja. In particular, they met during Cichano\u016dskaja\u2019s official visit to Moldova in October 2023 and on the sidelines of the European Political Community\u2019s summit in Copenhagen in October 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In September 2025, Belarusian Ambassador Ihar Bubien presented his credentials to Sandu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
