August 25, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and his officials are trying to place Belarus under foreign control and deprive Belarusians of the right to determine their own future, politician Pavie\u0142 \u0141atu\u0161ka has said in a statement marking 35 years since the adoption of Belarus\u2019 Declaration of Sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politician, who currently serves as deputy head of the opposition transition cabinet, described August 25, 1991, as a key date for the modern Belarusian statehood, noting that the majority of Belarusians \u201cfirmly aspire to live in a sovereign state.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCenturies of our ancestors\u2019 struggle for independence have finally culminated in victory, and sovereign Belarus has taken its place on the map of Europe,\u201d the cabinet\u2019s press office quoted him as saying. \u201cBelarusians have finally found a home of their own \u2013 a home where no one has the right to oppress us, dictate our path, impose foreign allies on us, or forbid us from speaking our native language.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141atu\u0161ka called Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka the \u201cenemy of Belarus,\u201d accusing him of sacrificing the country\u2019s independence to stay in power. \u201cOur main shared task is to prevent this crime against the people,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On August 25, 1991, the Declaration of Sovereignty adopted in 1990, was granted the force of law, making Belarus independent for the first time since the BNR, the short-lived state proclaimed in 1918.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
