August 19,<\/strong> Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarus\u2019 opposition politician Alaksandar Milinkevi\u010d will be buried on August 22 at Warsaw\u2019s Pow\u0105zki Cemetery, his wife Ina Kulej announced on Facebook.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Milinkievi\u010d will lie in state at St. John\u2019s Archcathedral in the Old Town from 10 a.m. with the mess starting at noon. The funeral is set for 3 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pow\u0105zki Cemetery (Cmentarz Wojskowy na Pow\u0105zkach) was founded in 1912 as a Russian military garrison\u2019s facility. It became Poland\u2019s military necropolis after 1918. Statesmen, political figures, poets, artists and scientists are buried there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Milinkievi\u010d died on August 11 aged 79.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born in Hrodna in 1947, Alaksandar Milinkievi\u010d graduated from the physics department of Hrodna State University and embarked on a distinguished two-decade career as a researcher and professor. After Belarus\u2019 independence in the early 1990, he transitioned into public service, rising through the ranks to the position of deputy head of the Hrodna City Executive Committee. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2001, Milinkievi\u010d acted as the campaign chief of opposition presidential candidate Siamion Doma\u0161. In October 2005, Belarusian opposition organizations selected him as their single presidential candidate. The election, in which Milinkievi\u010d officially got only 6.12 percent of the vote, was followed by a week of demonstrations against ballot rigging, with a tent camp at the center of Minsk between March 19 and March 24, 2006. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the dispersal of the protests and a 15-day jail term, Milinkievi\u010d announced the establishment of the Movement for Freedom to unite all supporters of democracy and a \u201cEuropean choice\u201d for Belarus. In December 2006, the European Parliament presented him with the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until 2016, Milinkievi\u010d led the Movement for Freedom. Frustrated with a lack of unity among opposition forces, he stayed away from the 2010 and 2015 presidential elections, despite being seen as a lead contender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Together with Belarusian Nobel Prize-winning writer \u015aviat\u0142ana Aleksijevi\u010d, Milinkievi\u010d co-founded Free Belarusian University in Warsaw in 2017, becoming its chancellor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amid the crackdown on\u00a0\u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s opponents after the 2020 presidential election,\u00a0Milinkievi\u010d\u00a0and his wife moved to Poland. While in exile,\u00a0Milinkievi\u010d\u00a0promoted Free Belarusian University as a center of Belarusian learning abroad and\u00a0provided\u00a0assistance\u00a0to Belarusian opposition\u00a0forces\u00a0as an advisor to\u00a0\u015aviatlana Cichano\u016dskaja. He described her as the clear winner of the 2020 election and the undisputed leader of all Belarusian pro-democracy forces.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
