{"id":200292,"date":"2026-08-18T11:38:46","date_gmt":"2026-08-18T08:38:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/200292\/"},"modified":"2026-08-18T11:38:48","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T08:38:48","slug":"minsk-does-not-allow-germany-to-care-for-military-graves-in-belarus","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/200292\/","title":{"rendered":"Minsk does not allow Germany to care for military graves in Belarus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>August 18,<\/strong> <strong><em>Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarusian authorities have so far rejected Germany\u2019s objections to the closure of the Minsk office of the People\u2019s Union for Maintaining Military Graves (Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgr\u00e4berf\u00fcrsorge, VDK), Berlin has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minsk closed the office in June 2025, citing legal irregularities, amid political tension between the two countries. Germany has so far failed in its appeal to overturn the decision, according to a letter from the German government to the opposition Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The German government also said that maintaining German military graves in Belarus would cost \u20ac120,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Belarus and Germany signed an agreement on the maintenance of military graves in 1996. It allows Germany to care for the graves of soldiers killed during World War I and World War II, as well as Germans who died as a result of deportation. Belarus is allowed to maintain the graves of Soviet soldiers and other people who died in Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Belarus has more than 100 cemeteries of German soldiers who died during World War I. Just over 30 are properly maintained. Most are located around Nara\u010d Lake, where fierce fighting took place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seven cemeteries are associated with World War II. They are located near the town of Biaroza, where the remains of around 9,000 German and Hungarian soldiers are buried; the village of \u0160\u010datkava in Babrujsk district (31,500); Chadasovi\u010dy (380); Hlybokaje (1,069); Biaroza\u016dka in Baranavi\u010dy district (252); Mahilo\u016d (498); and Tarasava in Minsk region, where more than 1,000 prisoners of war are buried.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>August 18, Pozirk.
