August 12, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>The neighboring European Union countries did not allow 121 undocumented third-country foreigners to cross irregularly via Belarus on August 11, posting a 20-day high in attempts, according to Pozirk\u2019s<\/em> analysis of border guards’ data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia reported a five-day high in attempts with 88 irregular crossings; Lithuania, 31, a record for this month; while two attempts targeted Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia has thwarted 548 attempts this month; Lithuania, 73 and Poland, 31. However, the number of irregular crossings stood at 652 between August 1 and 11, in contrast to 2,206 attempts reported in early August 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2026, the neighboring EU countries have recorded 11,082 irregular border crossings via Belarus, nearly three times fewer than during the same period last year. Attempts to cross irregularly into Poland plunged 55-fold in this period, while Latvia and Lithuania posted increases of 15 percent and 12 percent, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people eager to cross into the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government suspended a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia, Lithuania and Poland call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
