August 11, <\/strong>Pozirk<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong>. <\/strong>Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka accused the government of creating a \u201cdead-end situation\u201d for Belarusian fertilizer producers, saying they cannot sell their products either domestically or abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at a government conference on August 11, the Belarusian ruler stressed that fertilizer purchases for agriculture are subsidized and planned monthly by the government. He welcomed the fact that agricultural companies had \u201cused 92 percent of their mineral fertilizer quotas of August 1.\u201d At the same time, he stressed that some regions are behind schedule, especially on nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers for winter crops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, producers \u201ckeep unused quotas in warehouses and missed out on expected revenue,\u201d \u0141uka\u0161enka said. \u201cThe product is dead weight. It hasn\u2019t been supplied to the domestic market, and they can\u2019t sell it abroad. In today\u2019s global situation, they could have sold it internationally at a higher price.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to \u0141uka\u0161enka, the government proposes an 18-percent increase in fertilizer purchases by the domestic agricultural and farm produce processing sector in 2027, which he said would require about three billion rubles. Half would come from the national budget and go directly to producers and the rest would be covered with companies\u2019 own funds, loans, and local budget funds, he said. Producers would ship goods only after full payment, with the heads of regional government responsible for the enforcing this rule, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 major fertilizer producers, Bie\u0142aru\u015bkalij (Belaruskali), Hrodna Azot, and Homiel Chemical Plant, are under EU sanctions and banned from exporting their goods through Lithuanian seaports. The latter two also face US sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk argues that the sanctions are harmful to global food security, as Belarus accounts for \u201c20 percent of the world\u2019s output of mineral fertilizers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
