{"id":199502,"date":"2026-08-11T12:12:47","date_gmt":"2026-08-11T09:12:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/199502\/"},"modified":"2026-08-11T12:12:49","modified_gmt":"2026-08-11T09:12:49","slug":"new-cases-of-politically-motivated-persecution-reported-in-belarus","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/199502\/","title":{"rendered":"New cases of politically motivated persecution reported in Belarus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>August 11, Pozirk.<\/strong>&nbsp;Sources in Belarus reported&nbsp;new instances of politically motivated persecution in Belarus&nbsp;between&nbsp;August&nbsp;8&nbsp;and&nbsp;10, including&nbsp;pressure on former and current political prisoners and their families&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below is Pozirk\u2019s recap:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Illa Vieramieje\u016d, a 23-year-old political prisoner serving six and a half years in prison,\u00a0has been placed in a punishment cell for the second time within the last two months.\u00a0Vieramieje\u016d\u00a0was convicted in August 2022 of inciting hatred and attempting to organize \u201cmass riots,\u201d charges brought over his online comments on Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Surgeon Andrej Lubiecki\u00a0was released after completing his prison term. In April 2022, a judge of the Minsk Regional Court sentenced the man to five years in prison for allegedly grossly violating the public order, inciting hatred, insulting\u00a0Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u00a0and insulting a government official. In December 2025,\u00a0Lubiecki\u00a0was convicted of persistently violating prison rules and apparently had his term extended, according to the Viasna Human Rights Center.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The relatives of some former political prisoners who left Belarus are being summoned for interrogations several times a week. They are being threatened, including with foreign travel bans, and being used to blackmail emigrants into collaborating with Belarusian state security agencies, Dissidentby reported.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All public quiz shows have been cancelled in Hrodna. Such games have been equated with \u201cmass events\u201d requiring authorities\u2019 permission, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Human rights defenders have\u00a0documented more than 100,000 cases of politically-motivated persecution since 2020, including arrests, searches, interrogations, criminal convictions and pressure on activists and their families.\u00a0A total of 4,602 people have been granted political prisoner status in the six years since the\u00a02020\u00a0presidential election, including 538 over the last 12 months, the Viasna Human Rights Center\u00a0reported.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The number of documented political prisoners in Belarus decreased\u00a0remained unchanged at 879, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.
