August 6, <\/strong>Pozirk<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong>.<\/strong> Euronews is waiting for explanations from Belarusian authorities over their decision to label its website as \u201cextremist content,\u201d the channel\u2019s Editorial Director Claus Strunz says in a statement<\/u><\/a>, describing the crackdown as a sign that the \u0141uka\u0161enka regime is afraid of independent journalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A state that brands Euronews as \u201cextremist\u201d and blocks access to independent, impartial journalism reveals its own fear of free reporting, Strunz is quoted as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have not been informed of this decision and await the authorities\u2019 justification,\u201d he says. \u201cOur commitment remains unchanged: we stand with our audiences in Belarus and will continue to provide factual, independent journalism guided by our core editorial values.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities have yet to announce the decision and their arguments that led to this extreme ruling by which Euronews and several other digital media are now labelled \u201cextremist\u201d in Belarus, Strunz says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Euronews condemns Belarus\u2019 obscure and unilateral decision to designate Euronews\u2019 digital news coverage as \u201cextremist,\u201d a measure which exposes Euronews\u2019 huge audience in Belarus to legal penalties for \u201cstoring or distributing\u201d Euronews\u2019 pan-European content, the statement says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk now joins Moscow in banning both Euronews\u2019 television and digital news medias, depriving Belarus audiences of a vital source of factual and independent journalism which also covers Belarus, Russia and the war in Ukraine, Euronews says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On August 4, the website of Euronews was added to the information ministry\u2019s list of \u201cextremist content\u201d by order of the Horki District Court in the Mahilo\u016d region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Euronews was available to Belarusian cable subscribers for two decades. In April 2021, the information ministry removed the TV channel from the list of foreign media allowed to broadcast into Belarus. Pobeda(Victory), a Russian channel known for promoting the Kremlin\u2019s narratives about World War II, appeared on cable networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this year, the websites of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and the Russian service of Voice of America were added to the list of \u201cextremist content.\u201d A week ago, the Horki District Court branded the website of the Polish Press Agency (PAP) \u201cextremist.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s regime introduced the \u201cextremist content\u201d designation in the wake of the 2020 mass protests against election fraud to punish Belarusians for following critical media outlets and social media accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian law enforcement officers randomly check people\u2019s phones to see who they are following. Those found to possess or share links to banned media and accounts are punished by fines or jail sentences of up to 15 days under Article 19.11 of the Administrative Offenses Code. It does not carry any punishment for those producing banned content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police forced some of those arrested to confess to following \u201cextremist\u201d content before a video camera and then posted forced confessions on Telegram accounts to intimidate the public. State television journalists have been involved in recording forced confessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The extremist content list contains thousands of entries, so it is actually hard for people to follow it and delete blacklisted content from their devices.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
