July 30, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>\u015aviat\u0142ana \u0160acilina, a representative of the Belarusian pro-democracy forces in Ukraine, urged Kyiv to postpone the entry into force of the government\u2019s resolution No 141, which repeals the automatic renewal of temporary residence permits in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politician told reporters in Kyiv today that she submitted a written appeal to the Ukrainian government calling for expired passports to be recognized and for the document\u2019s entry into force to be postponed for 180 days.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of Russia\u2019s war on Ukraine in 2022, Belarusians have been able to legally stay in Ukraine with expired temporary residence permits. However, the document\u2019s provision removed temporary residence permits from the list of documents that are automatically extended during the war, she clarified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ukrainian legislation requires a valid national passport to renew a residence permit. Yet, in 2023 Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka banned Belarusian missions abroad from providing passport services to Belarusians, thus leaving many expats with expired IDs. Many exiles may face politically-motivated persecution if they choose to return to Belarus to renew their passports, \u0160acilina noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, approximately 3,000 Belarusians live in Ukraine with temporary residence permits. About 100 Belarusian volunteers have already been killed fighting for Ukraine, and more than 400 Belarusians have been convicted and are being held in \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s prisons because they supported Ukraine, the politician stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe want to make it clear to the Ukrainian government that we are ready to provide significant labor and military resources in Ukraine whenever needed. However, this requires certain conditions,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
