July 29, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>A command staff exercise will be held in the cities of Hrodna, Lida and Vialikaja Bierastavica in western Belarus on July 29 and 30 to test the readiness of the interior ministry\u2019s units for actions \u201cunder special conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The regional police department warned that traffic restrictions would be in place near the venues of the exercise and people might hear explosions and gunshots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The department asked for \u201cunderstanding,\u201d claiming that the \u201ctemporary inconveniences\u201d are designed to make people safer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During a similar drill conducted \u201cunder special conditions\u201d in Mahilo\u016d on May 27, Interior Minister Ivan Kubrako\u016d said that police were being trained to prevent a repeat of the 2020 protests, a reference to the massive peaceful demonstrations against alleged fraud in the presidential election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kubrako\u016d stressed that police officers should not hesitate to use firearms \u201cif someone is trying to commit mayhem\u201d against security forces deployed to suppress riots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police conducted exercises in Viciebsk on April 23 and 24, in Baranavi\u010dy, Brest region, on June 4, in Viciebsk and Re\u010dyca, Homiel region, on June 23 and 24, and in S\u0142onim on July 7 to hone their skills in suppressing street protests.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the 2020 post-election protests were largely peaceful, police used brutal force to disperse them and arrest participants. Several protesters were killed, but their deaths have not been investigated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
