July 28, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>The office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky asked the Ukrainian prosecutor general to consider opening a criminal case against Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, Reuters<\/em> reports, citing Zelensky\u2019s letter.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The document was sent at the request of Belarus Democratic Forum, an exiled Belarusian opposition group, that seeks \u0141uka\u0161enka prosecution for war crimes, genocide and “state terror,” Zelensky\u2019s office said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian ruler is \u2060complicit in Russia’s war on Ukraine and in the forced transfer of at least 2,442 Ukrainian children to Belarus, Belarusian activists said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zelensky\u2019s office official Oleh Tatarov confirmed that the appeal had been sent to the prosecutor\u2019s office for possible action if legal grounds were found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While \u0141uka\u0161enka is unlikely to appear before a Ukrainian court, any charges against him could provide Kyiv and the Belarusian opposition with more arguments to lobby the West to maintain pressure on his regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prosecution of \u0141uka\u0161enka could “significantly increase the personal legal and security risks\u201d for him and represent an act of historical justice, D\u017amitryj Ba\u0142kuniec of the Belarus Democratic Forum told Reuters<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It could have a profound impact inside Belarus, because \u0141uka\u0161enka would take it very personally and be deeply concerned about the consequences,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February 2022, Russia started a full-scale war against Ukraine in which the Belarusian authorities supported the Kremlin. Belarus allowed Russian troops and weapons to move freely through the country, use its airspace, refuel and store military equipment and attack Ukraine from its territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
