July 25, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Belarus has been fortifying the border with Ukraine for several years now, Vadzim Kaban\u010duk, defense chief in the opposition United Transitional Cabinet, said on the organization\u2019s Telegram channel, commenting on recent assurances by Belarusian Defense Minister Viktar Chrenin that Belarus has no intention of building fortifications there. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are satellite images as well as photo and video materials confirming the construction of new defensive structures at certain sections of the border,” said the former deputy commander of the Kastu\u015b Kalino\u016dski Regiment, a Belarusian volunteer force in the Ukrainian army. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kaban\u010duk recalled that Belarusian and Russian authorities had been giving similar assurances on the eve of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, with both Russian officials and Viktar Chrenin claiming thatthere would be \u201cno war.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kaban\u010duk warned against complacency and called on Belarus\u2019 pro-democracy forces, Ukraine and neighboring Western countries to prepare for the \u201cworst-case scenario.\u201d Special attention should be paid to the disinformation campaign being waged by Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s regime, he stressed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While meeting with \u0141uka\u0161enka on July 22, Chrenin denied reports that Belarus is constructing fortifications in areas bordering on Ukraine. \u201cWe have, of course, heard this [claim] and take it with a smile,\u201d he said, adding that such \u201cfake news\u201d is intended to \u201ccreate tension in society.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chrenin reported that \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s order to create defensive strongholds along Belarus\u2019 western and northern borders had been fulfilled. There are five fortified areas in the west and the north, he said. According to him, the construction of defense lines in the south \u201cis not even on the agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chrenin dismissed fears over the development of infrastructure at the border with Ukraine. According to him, authorities are \u201crepairing bridges, upgrading roads and creating new recreational areas\u201d there solely for improving living conditions and fostering economic growth.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
