July 20, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Shavkat Mirziyoyev and a visiting Belarusian government delegation discussed Belarus\u2019 possible contribution to the construction of Uzbekistan\u2019s first-ever nuclear power plant, according to the Uzbek president\u2019s press office. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mirziyoyev and the delegation, led by Deputy Prime Minister Viktar Karankievi\u010d, a former energy minister, discussed issues relating to the \u201cfurther expansion\u201d of the Uzbek-Belarusian \u201cstrategic partnership,\u201d the press office said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Separately under discussion was \u201cthe application of Belarus\u2019 experience\u201d to Uzbekistan\u2019s nuclear project, namely, assistance with designing and building the power plant, training the necessary personnel and implementing joint cooperation programs at the level of higher education institutions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Uzbekistan\u2019s has announced an intention to build a nuclear power plant in the northwestern Jizzakh region, which borders on Kazakhstan. Russia\u2019s State Atomic Energy Corporation (Rosatom) has been selected as the prime contractor. Rosatom played a similar role Belarus\u2019 nuclear power plant project. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the press office, the sides noted “with satisfaction” the results of Mirziyoyev\u2019s official visit to Minsk on July 8 and 9, above all for trade and economic cooperation.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The importance of the timely implementation of the adopted action plan, which provides for bringing trade to $2 billion and promoting cooperation projects in priority sectors of the economy, was emphasized,” the press office said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following his talks with Mirziyoyev, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka revealed that he had invited migrant workers from Uzbekistan to come to Belarus with their families. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tens of thousands of people have left Belarus in recent years as its authorities cracked down on political opponents and sided with Russia in its war against Ukraine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Belarusian ruler\u2019s press office, around 5,000 Uzbek workers are expected to arrive in Belarus\u2019 Viciebsk region to fill jobs in agriculture, construction, industry and the services sector, with some also set to work as nurses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka turned to Uzbekistan after a similar effort to recruit workers from Pakistan failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
