July 15, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Ukrainian officials suspect that Russia is still occasionally using relay systems in Belarus for drone attacks on western Ukraine, possibly without the Belarusian leader’s knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The suspicions were fueled by an attack on a gas station in the Korosten district of Ukraine’s Zhytomyr region this morning, according to Serhiy Beskrestnov, an advisor on defense technology at the Ukrainian defense ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Shahed drone flew along the Belarusian border before striking the gas station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSuch behavior is characteristic of UAVs controlled manually using a camera. The distance between the attack point and the Russian border was 260 kilometers. This is too far for a direct radio channel. No other Shaheds were spotted in the air at that time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Technicians are investigating the incident, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beskrestnov said Russia might have installed the relay system without the Belarusian authorities’ knowledge. \u201cIt can be done quickly and easily. That is why they [Belarusian authorities] should watch more closely what is going on in their country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The attack came weeks after Ukrainian officials said Belarus had disabled four relay systems following President Volodymyr Zelensky’s public warning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since then, Ukrainian officials have reported only occasional, and in some cases unconfirmed, instances of relay systems being used in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On June 19, Zelensky gave the Belarusian authorities one week to dismantle four drone-control relay systems allegedly used to facilitate Russian attacks on Ukraine. \u201cIf he [\u0141uka\u0161enka] does not shut them down, we will shut down everything within a week. Either they will do it, or we will,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On June 24, Zelensky said the relay systems had suspended operations. He followed up with additional demands, saying Belarus should stop developing an \u201caggressive infrastructure\u201d of roads and storage facilities for ammunition, fuel and lubricants near the Ukrainian border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
