July 14, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Around 5,000 Uzbek workers will arrive in Belarus’ Viciebsk region to fill jobs in agriculture, construction, industry and the services sector, with some also set to work as nurses, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s press office reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting in September, workers from Uzbekistan’s Andijan region will arrive in Belarus in groups of 500, it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The announcement came after the Belarusian ruler visited the Or\u0161a district in the Viciebsk region earlier today with Shukhratbek Abdurakhmanov, head of Andijan region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Uzbek side will reportedly receive 2,000 hectares in the Bie\u0161ankovi\u010dy district for potato cultivation, while storage facilities will be made available in the required capacity. Belarusian authorities also pledged to “help with technology” and provide seed potatoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A trading house for Uzbek goods has opened in Viciebsk, while Belarus is also considering transferring a tourist facility in Bahu\u0161e\u016dsk to the Uzbek side and has selected a site for the construction of a modern woodworking facility with Uzbek investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka also promised to provide housing for workers from Uzbekistan, saying they would have access to the same social services as Belarusians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We have more or less decent housing in our villages,\u201d he said. \u201cTogether, we’ll get things in order. Whatever we build, we’ll build for the people, for Uzbeks and Belarusians alike. . . When they come here, they should know that they are not strangers to us. We’ll take care of all that. The only thing is that they have to work.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just five days earlier, \u0141uka\u0161enka said after talks in Minsk with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev that he had invited migrant workers from Uzbekistan to come to Belarus with their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, the Belarusian ruler defended his decision to invite migrant workers from Uzbekistan in televised remarks during his recent trips to the economically depressed districts of the Mahilo\u016d and Viciebsk regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move is intended to address severe labor shortages in the country, he said during his tour of \u0160k\u0142o\u016d district in the Mahilo\u016d region yesterday. \u201cWe cannot get by without hiring workers from outside,\u201d he argued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka turned to Uzbekistan after his similar effort to bring workers from Pakistan had failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
