July 13, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Lithuania is expected to send a new group of nine border guards to Latvia to help its neighbor patrol the border, said the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The team will replace another Lithuanian group that has been working since July 1. It will be working in Latvia for two weeks. \u201cFurther decisions on such assistance will be made taking into account the situation at the neighbor\u2019s border with Belarus,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia has been the primary target of irregular migration by third-country nationals via Belarus this year, with nearly 7,900 incidents reported. Lithuania registered just over 900 attempts by migrants to cross the border from Belarus outside the official checkpoints in the same period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most migrants entering Latvia travel through Lithuania and Poland to Western Europe with Germany being their primary destination, said the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
